Ute Buying Guide for Melbourne

Utes are Australia's best-selling vehicles, and the right one depends on how you will use it. This guide walks through the main choices before you visit our Footscray or Melton dealerships.

1. Cab style

• Single cab: the longest tray or cab-chassis, best for pure work.
• Space or extra cab: a little storage behind the seats with a longer tray.
• Dual or crew cab: five seats and a shorter tub, the choice for most families and tradies.

2. 4x2 or 4x4

A 4x2 is cheaper and lighter, and fine for building sites and highway driving. Choose 4x4 if you go off-road, launch boats on wet ramps, or tow on dirt and gravel.

3. Towing and payload

Check the braked towing capacity, the payload and the gross combination mass (GCM). Many utes are rated to 3,500 kg, but you may not be able to tow that much with a full tray and a full cab. Ask us to work through the numbers with you.

4. Diesel, petrol or electrified

Diesel is still the towing favourite. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid utes are arriving, and we can help you compare running costs.
